A Hawaii man lost his life in an Oro Grande train accident Monday morning. The fatal train accident occurred near Riverside Preparatory Elementary School on National Trails Highway around 9:25 a.m.
According to deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Victor Valley Station, the victim was a 57-year-old man from Hawaii. He was traveling along National Trails Highway with his wife. Officials say the man spotted some graffiti on the side of the tracks. He then pulled over and exited his vehicle to take a picture. He was then fatally struck by the BNSF train.
Authorities are withholding the victim’s name until his family is notified. The he railroad crossing was closed for part of the day while police investigated the Oro Grande train accident.
Trains Often Extend Well Beyond the Rail
Despite the danger of standing near the path of a train, many people fall victim to train accidents every year. In fact, train accidents killed 265 people last year and injured nearly 800. Unfortunately, one misconception people have about trains is that standing alongside or near the tracks, rather than on them, is safe. The reality is that a train can extend three feet or more beyond the steel rail. Thus, standing near the tracks can be a deadly decision.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
