A Los Angeles man died Thursday morning in a Chiriaco Summit big rig collision. The fatal big rig crash occurred around 7:20 a.m. on westbound I-10 at Chiriaco Road, east of the Coachella Valley.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver of a westbound big rig stopped the truck on the right shoulder of the freeway. A Freightliner driver then traveled to the right of the roadway and struck the rear of the parked big rig. The crash caused the Freightliner to continue into the open desert north of the roadway before coming to a stop. The Freightliner driver, 67-year-old Fred Cormia, died at the scene.
A passenger in the Freightliner’s sleeper suffered moderate injuries in the crash. He was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the parked big rig was also hospitalized for moderate injuries.
Officers shut down westbound lanes due to a major diesel spill. One lane remained closed throughout the day. Police continue to investigate the fatal Chiriaco Summit big rig collision.
“We know big rig drivers are forced to work long hours and are often sleep deprived behind the wheel. How many more of these fatal crashes will it take before these trucking companies are held accountable?” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
