While you are out taking part in the hustle and bustle this season, don’t forget about the serious dangers of holiday traffic. The National Safety Council (NSC) that between the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, there will be roughly 700 traffic fatalities and nearly 80,000 traffic-related injuries.
According to the National Safety Council (NSC), traffic deaths in the first 10 months of 2016 were significantly higher than over the same time period in 2015.
The increase in traffic fatalities can be attributed to a number of causes. There is no doubt that Americans have been spending more time on the road, as there was a 3.3% increase in miles driven in the first half of 2016 compared to the same time frame in 2015. Low gas prices and an improving economy have led to the increase in vehicles on the road.
AAA is predicting roughly 103 million people will be traveling during the holiday period from December 23 to January 2.
If you will be among the millions taking to the roadways over the holidays, here are 10 tips to stay safe on your drive:
- Check that your vehicle is in good condition before you take off.
- Pack a first aid kit and emergency supplies.
- Share your travel plans with friends or family so someone knows your whereabouts.
- Plan for any weather that may affect your drive.
- Get a good night’s sleep the night before your drive.
- Always wear your seat belt in the car.
- Never drive under the influence.
- Avoid all distractions while you are driving.
- Make frequent stops, and share the driving responsibility if you are traveling a long distance.
