Three people were arrested early Sunday morning in Coachella for discharging firearms to celebrate the New Year. Deputies responded to a call at the 50-000 block of Saltillo Circle after receiving reports of shots being fired.
The first suspect, 26-year-old Rolando Zamora, was found shooting a gun outside a residence in the neighborhood. While he was being taken into custody, police heard shots being fired at a nearby residence. They arrested 23-year-olds Damian Cruz and Nicholas Ordorica. All three face charges for negligent discharge of a firearm.
Police seized two handguns and an unknown amount of ammunition. Under California law, the suspects could face jail time and/or serious fines for discharging a firearm recklessly. If convicted of a felony, the suspects will lose their ability to own a firearm.
“Though people may think shooting guns into the air is harmless, it still has the potential to lethally injure New Year’s Eve revelers on the ground,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group. “For the safety of others in the neighborhood, gun owners need to follow the law.”
