Child Injured in Cathedral City Near-Drowning Incident

A near-drowning incident in Cathedral City Tuesday left a 4-year-old child hospitalized. Police responded to a call at the 32-600 block of Desert Vista around 6:15 p.m.

According to police, several children were at the home. An adult was there supervising. However, at some point, two of the children opened the door to the backyard and pool area and went outside without supervision. The 4-year-old child then ended up in the pool.

Paramedics began treating the child at the scene. They then transported the child to Loma Linda University Hospital. The condition of the child is currently unknown. The near-drowning incident remains under investigation.

Near-Drownings Can Lead to Serious Injury

Drowning can happen very quickly, and sometimes silently. There are an average of 3,536 fatal unintentional drownings every year in the U.S., according to the CDC. About one in five people who die in drowning incidents are children ages 14 and under. And for every child drowning fatality, five children visit the emergency room for drowning injuries. Nonfatal drownings can result in serious injuries, including severe brain damage, long-term learning disabilities and other problems.

Pool Fences Save Lives

People who have home swimming pools must take this issue seriously. One of the best ways pool owners can protect children is to install a four-sided pool fence around the pool area. The fence should be at least 4 feet high and should have self-latching gates that cannot be reached by children.

Implement Layers of Protection

While pool fences can help keep kids safe, they are not infallible. Accidents can still happen. That’s why you need to have layers of protection to prevent drowning incidents. Here are 4 steps you can take to keep kids safe around the pool:

  1. Make sure an adult is constantly supervising children.
  2. Teach kids how to swim and how to get to safety if they fall in the pool.
  3. Install alarms that alert you when someone enters the pool area.
  4. Get CPR training for the whole family.
