Don’t Pokemon Go and Drive

AAA has issued a warning to drivers against playing Pokemon Go while behind the wheel. Since the game was released earlier this month, there have been numerous reports of drivers around the country getting into accidents while playing the game.

The latest was on Sunday, when a driver crashed his car at an intersection in Vermont while playing Pokemon Go. Police also found him to be driving under the influence. Two weeks ago in Auburn, New York, a driver crashed into a tree while playing the game.

Drivers being distracted by their smartphones certainly isn’t new news. However, the prevalence of the game—about 9.5 million people play in the U.S. alone—makes it a frightening new addition to the host of driving distractions already out there.

Distracted driving accounts for about 3,000 fatalities each year. The problem is especially widespread among teens. Distraction is a factor in 60% of moderate to severe teen crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

“Drivers are tempted by so many distractions already. Adding Pokemon Go to the mix is just another unnecessary danger,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
