A truck driver was fatally ejected from a tractor-trailer on I-40 in Newberry Springs Thursday night. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Volvo tractor-trailer was traveling in the westbound No 1. Lane approaching traffic ahead, which had slowed. The big rig then rear-ended a Peterbilt tractor-trailer. The Volvo driver was ejected from his truck.
The ejected driver died at the scene. It is unclear why the driver did not slow down with traffic, causing the crash. So far, police do not suspect drugs or alcohol contributed to the accident. They have not reported whether or not the driver was wearing a seat belt.
Big Rig Drivers Should Always Buckle Up
Occupational fatalities caused by big rig crashes account for 25% of all work-related deaths in the U.S. Moreover, nearly half of these deaths are due to failure to properly use a seat belt, according to the CDC. The CDC also reports that about 14% of truck drivers interviewed at truck stops said they do not routinely wear seat belts.
“We’re very sorry to hear that this driver was fatally ejected from his truck. Whether you drive a big rig or a small passenger car, everyone needs to buckle up,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
