Police arrested the drunk driver suspected of causing a fatal hit-and-run crash in Indio Saturday night. The crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. at Monroe Street and Valencia Avenue. Police say the suspect, 30-year-old Colin Havens of Palm Springs, was driving west on Valencia when he turned south onto Monroe and struck the pedestrian. Havens then fled the scene.
The pedestrian, 65-year-old Elena Ramirez, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police shut down the surrounding roads until Sunday morning while they investigated the fatal hit-and-run crash.
Havens was found about two miles away from the crash site around 1 a.m. Police say he was under the influence of alcohol when they located him. He was arrested for vehicular manslaughter while driving under the influence and hit-and-run.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim. Far too many lives are lost to pedestrian crashes in our community, ” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
