Though they were initially touted as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, studies continue to reveal the hidden dangers of e-cigarettes. Vaping has been linked to conditions such as wet lung disease, and exploding e-cigarette batteries have become the subject of several lawsuits. Last year, a study revealed that the flavored liquids used in e-cigarettes could produce dangerous levels of toxic vapors. And now, a new study suggests that these flavored liquids may also cause heart damage.
E-Cigarette Liquids Damage Cells in Study
A new study published in the American Heart Association’s journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology (ATVB) studied the effects of nine different e-cigarette flavorings. According to the report, all nine flavorings caused damage to cells.
Five of the flavors studied actually impaired the cell’s production of nitric oxide. The five flavorings that had this effect on cells in the study were vanilla, mint, cinnamon, clove and burnt. The study author, Jessica Fetterman of Boston University School of Medicine, noted to Reuters that loss of nitric oxide is an early indicator of toxicity, and has been associated with heart attacks and strokes.
This particular study was relatively small and limited in scope. However, it brings to light another hazard of vaping, and will hopefully spur more investigation into the health effects of e-cigarettes. As vaping continues to grow in popularity—particularly among young people—it is important for researchers to keep consumers informed of all the potential consequences to their health.
