An Electrical Short in your Swimming Pool could be Deadly

An electrical short in a hotel swimming pool shocked four people in Palm Desert Wednesday. Cal Fire responded to the incident at Chuckawalla Pool, located at the Marriott Shadow Ridge Resort. They transported four people to the hospital with minor injuries. It is unclear what caused the electrical short, but the incident is under investigation.

The incident draws attention to an often underestimated danger of swimming pools: electrocution. Last year, 43-year-old James Tramel died after he jumped into a swimming pool trying to save his daughter, who was being shocked. Tramel was electrocuted in the pool.

Electrical Components of Pool Must be Checked Regularly

To avoid a potentially deadly incident, pool owners should have the electrical and mechanical components of a swimming pool checked twice a year. Owners should also know where the Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (GFCI) is located. This circuit breaker shuts off all electric power in case of an emergency, like an electrical short. If something goes wrong, make sure everyone who uses your pool knows how to shut off the electricity.

“Electrocution is a serious, potentially deadly risk associated with swimming pools. Thus, pool owners should have their swimming pools regularly inspected to ensure electrical safety,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
