Fresh off a hefty $210 million fine due to the alarming potential for engine fires, Hyundai has suffered yet another setback, this time involving a recall of over 130,000 vehicles. According to the information included in the recall, Hyundai has discovered that these vehicles pose a risk of engine failure during use.
Auto Recall Information
The scope of this particular recall is limited to the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe, the 2015-16 Veloster, and the Sonata Hybrids produced between 2011-2013 and in 2016. The recall has been sourced to a manufacturing issue which results in excessive wear to connecting rod bearings and, consequently, engine failure.
The Risks Associated With Engine Failure
What makes this recall especially problematic is the fact that the engine failure could quickly result in a highly dangerous engine fire. Hyundai has told drivers that they should immediately take note if they hear a knocking sound coming from the engine. Warning lights will also appear on the dash prior to any fire ignition.
Hyundai has announced that they will begin notifying customers affected by the recall on January 22nd.
