The probe into Goodyear’s G159 tire continues, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has sent the tire company an information-seeking letter. Goodyear has stated that it plans to cooperate with the agency during its investigation.
The investigation will encompass roughly 40,000 tires, manufactured between 1996 and 2003. The NHTSA began investigating the tires at the end of last year, after a judge ruled to unseal records Goodyear has kept under wraps for years.
Sealed Goodyear Records Will Be Made Public
The Center for Auto Safety and Public Justice then called for the records to be made public. However, the tire company opposed the request. An Arizona judge sided with the Center earlier this month, stating that Goodyear’s need to keep the records confidential was outweighed by the public’s need to access them. According to the judge, the information should be made public because it “reveals a substantial potential risk to public health or safety.
Goodyear continues to claim there is no safety defect with the tires. However, the NHTSA’s letter states that allegations about the tires include 95 deaths or injury claims between 1998 and 2003. While production of the G159 stopped in 2003, it is unclear how many of these tires are still on the road. Moreover, there has never been a recall on these tires.
“Goodyear can no longer hide behind secret settlements to avoid responsibility for these dangerous tires,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
