Hit-and-Run Driver Causes Fatal San Bernardino Crash

A woman was killed by a hit-and-run driver in San Bernardino Saturday morning. Authorities say 42-year-old Maria Guerrero of Colton was headed east on Mill Street in a Nissan Armada when her vehicle was struck by a Mustang. The Mustang driver was headed south on Mt. Vernon when he ran a red light and struck Guerrero’s vehicle, sending it airborne and into a utility pole. The impact knocked down a traffic light.

According to witnesses, the Mustang spun and collided with a sedan. No serious injuries were reported for the occupants of the sedan. The driver then fled but was caught by Colton Police shortly after. The hit-and-run driver has not yet been identified.

A study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that 22% of crashes were caused by drivers who ran red lights, stop signs and other traffic signs. Red light running is a rampant problem, with one study showing a motorist running a red light every 20 minutes at a busy intersection.

“Traffic signals exist to improve safety on the roads. Violating red lights and other safety signs endangers not only the driver but, as we saw in this horrible accident, everyone around them,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
