Firefighters rescued an injured hiker from Ladder Canyon Trail in Mecca Thursday afternoon. The Riverside County Fire Department responded to the call around 12:47 p.m.
According to authorities, the hiker fell about three-quarters of a mile from the trail, fracturing his ankle. The injured hiker was taken to the hospital around 2:05 p.m. It is unclear whether or not he was hiking alone, or what caused him to fall from the trail.
Hiking is the third most dangerous recreational outdoor activity, surpassed only by snowboarding and sledding. The most common injuries sustained in outdoor recreational activities are fractures and sprains. A majority of the injuries are to the arms and/or legs, and about 23% are trauma to the head or neck.
“Although we are not dealing with heat-related injuries this time of year, hiking the desert trails still has its risks. Keep yourself safe by following safe hiking guidelines,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
