A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle in Thousand Palms Tuesday morning. The woman was crossing Varner Road when she was struck by a westbound Ford F150 truck. Authorities pronounced the victim, 25-year-old Alexandra Hendrickson, dead at the scene at 1:23 a.m.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Hendrickson walked directly in the vehicle’s path. The pickup truck driver, a 38-year-old man from Indian Wells, stopped his vehicle and cooperated with the investigation.
29 People Struck and Killed in Coachella Valley Last Year
The Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) is considering allocating $10 million to pedestrian and bicyclist safety projects. The proposal comes on the heels of one of the deadliest years for pedestrians in the Coachella Valley. In 2016, 29 people were fatally struck by vehicles in the Coachella Valley. That’s three times more than in 2015.
Most of the pedestrian fatalities last year were caused by jaywalking. If approved, the funds for pedestrian safety would go toward myriad improvement projects throughout the area. Top priority projects will be determined by CVAG’s Transportation Project Prioritization Study.
“We’re sorry to hear about another Coachella Valley pedestrian fatality. Hopefully this proposal is approved so officials can get to work improving pedestrian safety,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
