Police Officer Sues Ford Over Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

A New York police officer has filed a lawsuit against Ford Motor Co. over carbon monoxide poisoning from a Ford Explorer. The suit is a proposed class-action, which alleges the automaker should have known the vehicles emitted carbon monoxide fumes into the cabins, rendering them unsafe.

The police officer, Peter Lake, has been driving a 2016 Ford Explorer while working for the Nassau County Police Department. After reports of carbon monoxide leaks in the vehicles, Lake and his fellow officers were given carbon monoxide detectors for their vehicles. According to the police officer, the detectors would routinely go off while officers were in the Explorers.

In February, Lake was involved in a crash caused by carbon monoxide poisoning from his vehicle. Following the crash, the police contacted Ford, but Lake continues to drive the Explorer, as the problem has still not been resolved.

The lawsuit alleges that the design of the vehicle allows exhaust fumes to accumulate behind the bumpers and within the interior and exterior panels. Moreover, Lake’s lawsuit claims that Ford must have known about the dangers because the company sent technical service bulletins to dealerships about the issue. However, none of the repairs fixed the problem for the police vehicles.

“These vehicles clearly pose a health and safety problem for police officers and others who drive them. It is time for Ford to make this right,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
