A Palm Springs traffic safety grant could help make South Palm Canyon Drive safer for pedestrians. Last week, a pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries after she was struck by a vehicle on that road. Since 2012, at least two pedestrians have died on South Palm Canyon.
Why is South Palm Canyon Drive so Prone to Pedestrian Accidents?
Restaurants and shopping on Palm Canyon usually results in relatively high pedestrian traffic. Moreover, the area has a significant homeless population that adds to the foot traffic. Some blame the lack of lighting along the roadway for the high rate of crashes that have occurred there.
Palm Springs has received a $6 million grant designated for traffic safety improvements throughout the city. According to the Desert Sun, $2 million of that will go toward improvements on South Palm Canyon between Mesquite Avenue and Camino Real.
City officials say improvements might include new traffic signals, improved street lighting and pedestrian crosswalks. Construction on these projects should begin by late 2018.
“We’re hopeful that this grant will help reduce pedestrian accidents on South Palm Canyon Drive, as well as other areas of the city,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
