A slip and fall accident can result in a variety of serious injuries—usually broken bones, bruises, sprains and strains. But particularly bad falls can also result in traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Sometimes these injuries clear up within a few days or weeks, but other times, TBIs can be severe enough to alter a person’s life for a long period of time.
Some symptoms of mild brain injuries include:
- Headaches that worsen over time
- Nausea and vomiting
- Dizziness
- Blurred vision
- Sensitivity to light
- Difficulty thinking clearly
- Mood swings
- Poor sleep
While these symptoms usually improve over time, some more serious symptoms could be indicative of a more severe TBI. These symptoms include:
- Convulsions
- Seizures
- Inability to wake up
- Numbness in extremities
- Confusion
- Slurred speech
- Unusual behavior, such as uncharacteristic aggressiveness
Anyone experiencing symptoms of a TBI, whether mild or serious, should be seen and diagnosed by a doctor as soon as possible.
How is a Traumatic Brain Injury Treated?
Treatment for a TBI depends on the severity of the injury. For a mild concussion, your doctor will likely ask you to get lots of rest, and possibly take painkillers for the headache. More severe TBIs can require extensive treatment, including:
- Occupational therapy
- Speech therapy
- Physical therapy
- Psychiatric therapy
- Surgery to repair brain tissue and/or blood vessels
- Medication
