Rescue workers saved a stranded hiker in Apple Valley Wednesday morning. The hiker, 51-year-old Avery McLemore, suffered heat-related injuries and respiratory distress while hiking in the Deep Creek Hot Springs area around 8:30 a.m. Authorities say McLemore called 911 when he was unable to keep hiking.
Stranded Hiker Hoisted into Rescue Helicopter
The Sheriff’s Department and San Bernardino County Fire Department teamed up to search for McLemore. The Sheriff’s helicopter then located the stranded hiker on a steep trail. Air Rescue 307 hoisted a rescue medic down to McLemore, then hoisted them both back into the helicopter.
Paramedics treated McLemore once he made it down to the parking lot. They then transported him to the hospital for treatment.
The high yesterday in Apple Valley was 100.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Hiking can be hazardous any time of the year, but extreme heat makes it even more dangerous. Follow these 8 rules for safe hiking if you decide to hit the trails this summer.
“This hiker did the right thing by calling 911 when he knew he could no longer continue. We’re glad rescue workers successfully brought him to safety,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
