You have probably seen plenty of people taking selfies at inappropriate times—but some people take it to the extreme, sacrificing their safety for the perfect selfie. This happened to 26-year-old Wu Yongning, a stuntman who fell to his death from a 62-story building in Changsha, China, on Nov. 8.
According to the South China Post, the martial arts-trained stuntman scaled the building as a challenge to win $15,000. It is unclear who organized the challenge. However, a relative says that Yongning was planning to propose to his girlfriend. He apparently needed the money for his wedding and medical treatment for his mother.
Russian Model Dangles from Skyscraper for Instagram Photo
Daredevils who attempt these stunts are known as “rooftoppers.” Earlier last year, Russian model Viki Odintcova attempted a similar feat, dangling off a 1,004-foot-high skyscraper in Dubai. What for? The perfect Instagram photo, of course. The building’s developer, Cayan Group, condemned the stunt. They claim it was performed without their knowledge and without any safety precautions. Cayan Group also says it plans to take legal action against Odintcova.
“No amount of likes on Instagram is worth your life. Consider that before putting yourself in danger just to take a cool selfie,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
