The Department of Transportation announced Friday that it will be accelerating the Takata airbag recall schedule. The new timetable will ensure that replacement parts are available more quickly. It also guarantees that the most at-risk vehicles are addressed as soon as possible.
Takata Airbag Deaths
The death toll related to the defective airbags is now up to 11 in the U.S. Additionally, 180 people have suffered injuries due to the airbags exploding. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Takata recall is the largest and most complex safety recall the U.S. has ever seen.
Takata Recall will Take Years to Complete
As of this month, dealerships have repaired roughly 12.5 million defective Takata airbags. The recall involves a total of 42 million vehicles. Thus, up to 69 million airbags will end up being repaired.
Even with the accelerated schedule, the final recalls will not be completed until September 2020. According to the NHTSA, this projection could improve if consumers were more responsive when they receive recall notices. Visit safercar.gov to see if your vehicle is part of the recall.
“Bringing your vehicle in for a recall is an inconvenience, but in this case it could truly save your life. We encourage anyone who has received a recall notice to schedule their repair right away,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
