Takata Airbags Explode in Truck

By now, you’ve likely heard about Takata airbags exploding in vehicles, causing injuries and deaths and spawning massive vehicle recalls. Last August, a truck transporting Takata airbag propellant material crashed and exploded in Texas. One woman died in the crash and four others were injured.

The truck driver apparently failed to negotiate a curve along a highway, causing the crash. The explosion caused the truck and a nearby home to catch fire. A woman inside the home, 67-year-old Lucila Robles, was killed in the explosion. The truck driver and his passenger escaped before the vehicle exploded. Debris was found up to two miles away from the crash.

According to Takata, the airbag propellant in the truck contained the explosive chemical compound ammonium nitrate. Takata airbags containing this chemical have caused at least 14 deaths and more than 150 injuries.

Are Takata Airbags Still Being Installed in Cars?

A woman was rushed to the emergency room in Las Vegas last month after her airbag exploded in her 2002 Honda Accord. The explosion shot shrapnel at her and damaged her vocal cords. The victim, 18-year-old Karina Dorado, was driving a used car that had been given a salvage title last year. It was then repaired and resold. The airbag inflator in the vehicle was traced back to a 2001 Honda Accord, meaning it was either removed by a salvage yard or stolen.

According to Carfax, thousands of vehicles with salvage titles are sold each year. And there is no law preventing recalled air bags or other vehicle parts from being removed from wrecked cars and sold again. Thus, recalled parts can still end up in used vehicles.
“People who buy secondhand vehicles should not have to worry that their cars contain unsafe recalled parts. This practice needs to be regulated,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
