Last week, the White House announced that President Donald Trump plans to nominate Heidi King as the administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). King has been serving as the agency’s deputy administrator since the fall, but the NHTSA has been without a permanent administrator for over a year. The Senate will have to approve the nomination for King to secure the position.
NHTSA Faces Significant Challenges Ahead
The appointment comes at a critical time for the NHTSA. The agency must begin to flesh out a plan for autonomous vehicle regulation. This is particularly important now, in the wake of recent crashes, such as the Uber self-driving car accident that killed a pedestrian last month. King will need to guide the NHTSA in safely overseeing autonomous vehicle technology, while also encouraging the development of these systems, which will eventually save many lives on U.S. roadways.
On top of that, King will need to effectively address the Takata airbag recall. At the top of the list are thousands of older model Ford trucks, which owners were instructed not to drive earlier this year. The vehicles have airbags that are at a heightened risk of exploding. Moreover, nearly every automaker is dealing with the Takata recall in some capacity, with as many as 70 million airbags at risk of rupturing.
“There’s no doubt the agency will need robust leadership to tackle the many auto safety issues facing the country. Hopefully the new administrator will be up to the task,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
