Novartis Settlements Have Finally Been Approved
Novartis Settlements Have Finally Been Approved

The whistleblower in the Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. scandal which revealed the major drugmaker’s plans to expand prescription levels through hidden kickbacks is set to receive a hefty sum totaling well over $100 million in addition to a share of the interest that was paid by Novartis as part of the False Claims Act which originally totaled $629.8 million.

For those who are unfamiliar with the origins of this settlement, the whistleblower in question originally alleged that Novartis was offering hundreds of millions of dollars in kickbacks to those who prescribed to their products. The so-called “Bilotta” case focused specifically on the actions of Novartis reps who knowingly courted doctors with these kickbacks in order to ensure that they wrote descriptions for Novartis drugs. When doctors were invited to attend multiple meetings, the suit alleges, they were not presented with any new information, but instead were given a variety of gifts and incentives.

Exploring Recent History

The Department of Justice is no stranger to pursuing settlements with Novartis, and this latest news is one of many such fiscal agreements that have been reached over the past decade. For now, however, the “Bilotta” suit has come to its conclusion.
