10 Safety Tips to Avoid Firework Eye Injuries
10 Safety Tips to Avoid Firework Eye Injuries

With Independence Day on the horizon, firework sales will be on the rise—and with them, unfortunately, firework eye injuries. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, eye injuries related to fireworks increased from 600 in 2011 to 1,300 in 2014.

Eye injuries from fireworks can be extremely serious, such as ruptured eyeballs and chemical burns.  Despite the dangers, according to a survey conducted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology,  far more Americans are concerned about protecting their eyes while doing home repairs or housework than while handling fireworks.

To avoid firework eye injuries during the summer holidays, follow these 10 safety tips:

  1. When using fireworks, keep a bucket of water or hose close by.
  2. Douse used fireworks with water before discarding.
  3. Never let children play with fireworks.
  4. Do not pick up or relight fireworks that failed to ignite. Douse them in water and discard them.
  5. Only use fireworks outdoors in areas where they are permitted.
  6. Light fireworks one at a time.
  7. Always hold fireworks away from your face when lighting them.
  8. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting the firework.
  9. Never carry fireworks in your pocket or purse.
  10. Wear protective eyewear when handling fireworks.

“There are very real dangers with handling consumer-grade fireworks. Take the proper precautions to keep yourself from sustaining unnecessary injuries,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
