11th US Victim of Defective Takata Airbags Killed in Riverside County

A 50-year-old woman in Riverside County is the 11th person to die in the U.S. from a defective Takata airbag. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed her death Thursday, but her identity has not been released.

The woman was killed in an accident on September 30th in Riverside County. She was driving a 2001 Honda Civic. According to Honda Motor Co., the vehicle had been included in multiple recalls beginning in 2008. More than 20 recall notices had been mailed to the registered owners. Honda’s records indicate the vehicle was never brought in for repair.

In June, the NHTSA warned more than 300,000 owners of older model Hondas and Acuras to stop driving them until they had been repaired. These vehicles, including 2001 and 2002 Civics and Accords, were found to be extremely dangerous. In the event of a crash, these airbag inflators had a 50% chance of exploding.

More than 100 million vehicles have been recalled worldwide for defective Takata airbags. The Tokyo-based company faces billions in costs for the deadly defect.

Drivers can type in their VIN number at safercar.gov to see if their vehicle is part of the recall. Anyone who owns one of these especially high-risk vehicles will be prioritized in the recall.

“The risk of a deadly explosion in these older model vehicles is simply not worth getting behind the wheel. If you have one of these cars and still have not had it repaired, make the appointment right away and do not drive the car until it has been fixed,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
