14 Crashes Linked to Pokemon Go in Just 10 Days

A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine revealed that the Pokemon Go game was linked to several crashes during a 10-day period. The study reviewed 4,000 tweets from July 10 – 20 and noted all the tweets that linked driver or pedestrian distraction. When scaled up for population, the study estimated there were 113,993 tweets discussing drivers and pedestrians playing the game.

Over the same time period, the study discovered 14 crashes linked to someone playing Pokemon Go.

What’s the solution? The researchers suggest that creators of augmented reality games include a feature that disables game play once a user reaches a certain speed. Pokemon Go now has a feature that tracks speed and requires the payer to verify they are a passenger and not behind the wheel.

“Unfortunately, a warning from the app not to play while driving isn’t enough to keep some drivers from playing while driving. These augmented reality games really need to automatically disable game play when high speeds are detected,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
