A new technological device called the FARO scanner is changing the way Palm Springs police officers investigate fatal accidents. The $85,000 device, donated by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, uses lasers to map a scene in just minutes.
The scanner emits a laser, which measures millions of points at a scene. It then produces a photographic image, which is later merged with the laser scan through a software program. The result is a virtual replica of the accident scene.
FARO Scanner Simplifies Mapping of Accident Scenes
Instead of physically marking points at a scene and manually measuring them, officers can now scan the scene with the FARO scanner. According to Officer Alan Donovan, who is in charge of the Palm Springs Police Department’s FARO device, officers can now go to a scene and scan it, then never have to return to the scene for data.
The scanner can help officers investigate the scene of an accident more effectively. It can also assist in officers and prosecutors when they present their cases in a courtroom. Instead of relying on photographs to tell the story, they can now provide a detailed 3D animation of the scene.
So far, the police department has mostly used the scanner to investigate fatal collisions. However, other police departments have used the device to investigate other crime scenes, such as homicides.
“This device could be a game-changer for accident investigations in Palm Springs,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
