3 Tips to Avoid Road Rage

A majority of drivers have experienced road rage in the past year, according to a AAA study. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety surveyed 2,705 licensed drivers ages 16 and older and found that nearly 80% had expressed anger, aggression or road rage at least once.

Road rage can manifest in various aggressive behaviors. The study showed that 51% of drivers had purposely tailgated someone, 47% had yelled at a driver, 33% had made angry gestures, and 12% had purposely cut off another driver.

Drivers who are most likely to express their road rage through aggressive behaviors are males between ages 19-39. Men were three times more likely than females to get out of their car to confront another driver or purposely hit another vehicle.

AAA suggests 3 tips to avoid road rage:

  1. Don’t offend other drivers. Avoid actions that will cause another driver to have to change speed or direction.
  2. Be tolerant. If a driver does something to offend you, assume it isn’t personal and avoid getting angry.
  3. Do not respond. If someone cuts you off or makes a rude gesture toward you, don’t engage them. If you feel like you’re in danger, call 911.

“All too often, road rage leads to unnecessary accidents and injuries. The best thing to do is keep a cool head when you’re on the road, even if another driver provokes you,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
