Smart Cars Recalled for Fire Risk

Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for roughly 43,000 Smart cars for a defect that can cause the engine to catch fire. According to the automaker, the rear insulation mat in the vehicle can deform and loosen over time. It can then come into contact with hot exhaust system parts and catch fire.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began investigating the defect in 2016. There have been 27 reports of engine fires in the Smart cars and one injury related to the defect.

The recalled vehicles include model year 2008 and 2009 cabrio and coupe Smart cars in the U.S. Mercedes will notify vehicle owners of the recall, and dealers will replace the rear insulation mat with a safer version.
