There were three fatal collisions in the Coachella Valley over the weekend along a stretch of highway notorious for deadly crashes. The crashes occurred along Highway 62 and I-10 near Desert Center. Once crash resulted in two deaths, and the other two crashes each had one fatality.
Head-On Crash on Eastbound Highway 62
The first fatal crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. Friday. According to police, an 18-year-old male driver was traveling east on Highway 62 in a white Dodge Ram when he entered the westbound lane. He collided with an oncoming red Dodge Ram driven by a 56-year-old man. The man in the red truck was killed, as was a 20-year-old female passenger inside the white truck. The driver of the white truck suffered major injuries and was airlifted to the hospital.
Passenger Ejected from Big Rig on I-10
Another fatal accident occurred around 11 p.m. on I-10, one mile west of Highway 177. A 43-year-old man was traveling east in a big rig, when the truck went off the road and rolled over. A passenger in the big rig was ejected during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The man has been identified as 67-year-old Jose Antonio Gutierrez-Avila. The driver of the big rig was hospitalized for moderate injuries.
Driver Struck Outside Big Rig on I-10
The third fatal crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. Saturday on eastbound I-10 near Eagle Mountain Road. Police say a 55-year-old man from Idaho was driving a big rig on the highway when he pulled over for unknown reasons. The man exited his vehicle and was struck by a Ford U-Haul. He died at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Indio shortly after.
