Active Tuberculosis Diagnosed at Indio High School

A case of active tuberculosis has been confirmed at Indio High School. The health department says a student has been diagnosed and is being treated for tuberculosis. The student is expected to recover.

According to health officials, 165 students and several staff members may have been exposed to the disease. The health department has notified those who might be at risk and will conduct a clinic to test them at the school later this month.

Tuberculosis is an airborne infection that is spread when an infected person coughs or speaks. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, coughing, chest pain, chills, fever, night sweats, loss of appetite and unintentional weight loss. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should contact their doctor immediately.

Last year, thousands of veterans were exposed to tuberculosis when an employee was diagnosed with it. The VA Loma Linda Healthcare System sent a notice to 1,727 veterans who who stayed at the medical center between June 1 and October 27 warning that they may have been exposed to TB. The VA offered free blood tests at the center for all those who were contacted.

“Tuberculosis is extremely serious and can be fatal. We encourage everyone who was contacted to be tested,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
