Which Age Group is Most Likely to be in a Distracted Driving Crash?

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is partnering with Impact Teen Drivers (ITD) to address the issue of distracted driving. The two organizations will work toward raising awareness of the dangers of distracted driving and enforcing safe driving practices.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 10% of drivers between 15 and 19 years of age who were involved in fatal collisions were distracted at the time of the crash. Teens are the age group most likely to be involved in a distracted driving crash.

This fact probably comes as no surprise to most of us—teens are the least experienced drivers, and they are part of a generation that is constantly connected via their mobile devices.

The joint effort by CHP and ITD, known as the Teen Distracted Drivers Education and Enforcement VI campaign, is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety. Representatives will work to educate teen drivers at school and community events across the state. CHP officers will also conduct teen distracted driver enforcement operations over the course of the next year. The goal is to create a distraction-free driving culture and save lives.

“Distracted driving crashes are totally preventable. Teenage drivers are the least experienced drivers, but this can actually be a good thing when it comes to education. They are just beginning to form their habits behind the wheel, and if we can get them to understand the dangers of distracted driving early on, we’re more likely to impact them for a lifetime,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
