One person was injured in a rear-end collision in Apple Valley Friday afternoon. Police say a Toyota Tacoma was coming to a stop at a red light on eastbound Highway 18 when it was rear-ended by a white Cadillac that failed to slow down.
The impact caused the pickup truck to overturn and crash into a traffic control box. The Tacoma came to a rest on its wheels at the intersection of Highway 18 and Quinnault Road. The rollover crash occurred around 3 p.m.
The driver of the Tacoma was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. No one else reported injuries at the scene. Eastbound traffic was blocked until 3:30 p.m. The intersection operated as a four-way stop for roughly three hours until Caltrans was able to repair the traffic control box. The Apple Valley Sheriff’s station is investigating the rear-end collision.
There are roughly 1.7 million rear-end collisions annually, resulting in 17,000 deaths and 500,000 injuries. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), 80% of these crashes could be prevented by collision avoidance systems. The organization has recommended that automakers begin making these systems standard in their vehicles in order to save thousands of lives every year.
“About 87% of rear-end collisions occur because drivers are not paying attention to the road. Advancements like collision avoidance systems, along with continued driver education and enforcement efforts, will help reduce the damage done by rear-end crashes each year,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
