1 Injured in Victorville Tractor-Trailer Crash

A Victorville tractor-trailer crash shut down Palmdale Road Friday afternoon. The truck accident occurred around 2:20 p.m. Police say a tractor-trailer hauling equipment and a light blue sedan collided in the accident. However, it is unclear how the accident occurred.

The tractor-trailer was spread across eastbound and westbound lanes, but it did not appear to have sustained damage. The front of the sedan, including the windshield, sustained significant damage and was towed away.

One person involved in the accident suffered unknown injuries. Police closed down Palmdale Road from the Walmart shopping center to Emerald Road until about 3 p.m. The Victorville tractor-trailer crash is under investigation.

Semi Trucks Cause Thousands of Crashes Every Year

In 2013, large trucks contributed to 338,000 crashes. Of those crashes, 3,906 resulted in a fatality and 73,000 caused injuries. Another 265,000 caused property damage.

Of the roughly 15.5 million trucks on U.S. roadways, about 2 million are tractor-trailers. With the sheer amount of these vehicles on the road—and the fact that they weigh about 20 times more than an average passenger vehicle—these crash statistics are almost unsurprising.

What Causes Most Tractor-Trailer Crashes?

According to a study by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the most common causes of semi-truck accidents are prescription drug use (26%), speeding too fast for conditions (23%), over-the-counter drug use (17%) and driver fatigue (13%). Illegal drug use contributes to just 3% of truck accidents, and alcohol causes about 8% of them.
