10 Safety Tips for Thanksgiving Travel

Thanksgiving travel will be at a nine-year high this year, thanks to low gas prices. Nearly 50 million people will be traveling at least 50 miles from Nov. 23 – 27, according to AAA, which is a 2% increase from 2015. Nearly 90% of those travelers will be driving.

Historically, Thanksgiving is one of the most dangerous holidays for drivers. Between 2006 and 2011, traffic deaths around the Thanksgiving holiday accounted for 15% of all traffic fatalities in November.

If you are taking to the roads over the holiday, here are 10 Thanksgiving travel safety tips to follow from the Red Cross:

  1. Check that your vehicle is in good condition before you take off.
  2. Pack a first aid kit and emergency supplies.
  3. Share your travel plans with friends or family so someone knows your whereabouts.
  4. Plan for any weather that may affect your drive.
  5. Get a good night’s sleep the night before your drive.
  6. Always wear your seat belt in the car.
  7. Never drive under the influence.
  8. Avoid all distractions while you are driving.
  9. Make frequent stops, and share the driving responsibility if you are traveling a long distance.
  10. Follow the rules of the road and look out for work zones.
