A 12-year-old bicyclist suffered minor injuries after an SUV struck her in Bermuda Dunes. The collision occurred around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the girl was riding her bicycle in the Big O Tires parking lot on Washington Street when she was hit. The vehicle, a silver SUV, then fled the scene.
Paramedics transported the 12-year-old bicyclist to John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital for treatment. Police are still searching for the hit-and-run suspect. Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact the CHP at (760) 772-8911.
Caltrans Releases Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Plan
Earlier this month, Caltrans released the first draft of its bicycle and pedestrian safety plan. The proposal offers policy recommendations for cities to implement for improving pedestrian and bicyclist safety. Some of these recommendations are:
- Include more questions and content about bicycle and pedestrian safety on DMV exams.
- Encourage drivers to retake driver’s license exams to keep their knowledge of traffic laws fresh. Cities might consider incentives for drivers who take the initiative to improve safety, such as reducing registration fees.
- Prioritize road projects that improve pedestrian and bicycle safety.
- Update police training with a focus on risky behaviors that put pedestrians and bicyclists in danger. Such behaviors include speeding, distracted driving and failing to yield.
Do You Have Suggestions for Improving Road Safety?
Residents can view the plan from Caltrans and offer suggestions through March 10. Caltrans will finalize the recommendations in April.
“Hopefully authorities catch this hit-and-run suspect quickly. Bicyclist and pedestrian safety should be of high priority to every city throughout the Low and High Desert,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
