An 18-year-old pedestrian was killed in a fatal crash Friday night just outside the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Michala Freehand of Highland, California, was struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee around 8:13 p.m. as she was crossing the street. The vehicle was traveling eastbound on Avenue 52 east of Monroe Street.
Freeland died of her injuries an hour later at Eisenhower Medical Center. The driver and his infant passenger were uninjured, and remained at the scene to cooperate with the investigation.
According to police, Freehand was in town looking for a job at the festival but was not an attendee. Alcohol and drugs are not currently being considered factors in the fatal crash.
“Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the young woman during this difficult time,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group. “With so many pedestrians in the area of the Empire Polo Fields during Coachella and Stagecoach, please be extra cautious.”
