Two pedestrians were struck and injured in the Coachella Valley Thursday. Around 3:30 p.m., a Desert Ridge Academy student was struck by a vehicle just outside the school, located on the 79700 block of Avenue 39 in Indio. The student complained of pain and was then taken to the hospital. The driver stopped and cooperated with police.
A few hours later, a female pedestrian was struck and injured in Palm Springs. The pedestrian crash occurred around 8:45 p.m. on South Palm Canyon Drive at Avenida Palmera. Police say the woman suffered life-threatening injuries. She was taken to a local hospital, but her condition is currently unknown.
Police say the driver of the Toyota pulled over immediately and cooperated with the investigation. Moreover, they do not suspect the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The accident shut down South Palm Canyon Drive from Morongo Road to Avenida Olanch until about 2:30 a.m.
Is Palm Canyon Drive Dangerous for Pedestrians?
This area of Palm Canyon Drive has seen several pedestrian crashes over the past few years. In 2014, a female pedestrian was struck and killed in the roadway. Two years prior, a vehicle fatally struck a bicyclist who was crossing the street. The area is also notorious for its lack of lighting and high volume of pedestrians.
“Our thoughts are with both pedestrians who were injured Thursday. We hope they both recover quickly from their injuries,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
