Three people were killed in an I-10 big rig collision Thursday morning near Desert Center. The fatal crash occurred around 6 a.m. on eastbound I-10 near Eagle Mountain Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a 2017 Peterbilt big rig was parked along the shoulder of the highway. The driver was standing outside of the truck when the driver of a 2009 International big rig traveling east lost control of his truck. The driver crashed into the parked big rig, causing one of the trucks to erupt in flames.
Two men in the International truck and the driver of the parked Peterbilt truck died at the scene. A young girl who was traveling in the International truck suffered major injuries. She was airlifted to Riverside County Medical Center.
Police rerouted traffic around the crash site via Eagle Mountain Road to Ragsdale Road. One eastbound lane of I-10 was reopened around 12:30 p.m. The I-10 big rig collision is still under investigation.
At least 10 other people have died this year in crashes along the same stretch of I-10 between Dillon Road and Highway 177. In 2016, another 12 were killed.
“Our hearts go out to the victims and their families. We don’t yet know the cause of this crash, but we know there is serious concern over the number of truck drivers who drive on little to no sleep, and those who drive with conditions like sleep apnea,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
