6 Tips for Keeping Halloween Trick-or-Treaters Safe

Today is Halloween, which means tonight the streets will be flooded with trick-or-treaters. Let’s make sure it is a fun, safe night for our local kids by driving safely and making sure children are being safe while they trick-or-treat.

Since there will be more pedestrians on the road than usual tonight, it’s important for drivers to take it slow and heed these precautions, especially in residential areas:

  • Drive at least 5 mph under the speed limit when you are nearing residential roads so you will have extra time to react if a child runs out into the street.
  • Pay extra attention when you turn onto streets from driveways and alleys, as trick-or-treaters could be heading toward you.
  • Don’t drink. Nearly half of all crashes that occurred on Halloween night from 2009 to 2013 involved alcohol.

Parents supervising trick-or-treaters should also be diligent in enforcing safe pedestrian behaviors, including these:

  • Make sure your children stay close to you and never let them run ahead of you into the street.
  • Although others might be jaywalking, only let your children cross at intersections when it is safe to do so. It might slow them down a bit, but teaching them pedestrian safety will pay off in the long run.
  • It’s also a good idea to wear bright clothing or carry glow sticks to make yourself more visible to drivers.
