A woman was injured in a head-on collision on Highway 18 in Apple Valley Wednesday morning. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the driver of a 2011 Dodge 1500 pickup was approaching Highway 18 from Bear Valley Road when he lost control of the truck. The vehicle skidded across Highway 18 and collided head-on with a 2008 Honda Fit on the shoulder of the roadway. Authorities say the Honda driver swerved onto the shoulder to try to avoid the pickup.  but ended up being hit. The truck was overturned by the impact. The crash happened at 5:46 a.m.

The Honda driver, a 34-year-old Apple Valley woman, was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center for moderate injuries. The Dodge driver, a 25-year-old man also from Apple Valley, sought his own medical attention.

CHP says speeding might have been a factor in the crash, but the investigation is ongoing.

Speeding is a factor in 30% of all crashes and costs society more than $40 billion every year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Although the total number of traffic fatalities went down significantly from 2003 to 2012, the percentage of speeding-related fatalities stayed almost exactly the same, meaning speed continues to be a significant contributor to deadly accidents.

“Following the speed limit is so important, even if you’re driving very early in the morning and you might have most of the road to yourself,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
