Bayer Asks Judge to Overturn $289 Million Roundup Verdict

Bayer and its newly acquired Monsanto are asking a California judge to toss a $289 million verdict awarded to a school groundskeeper who allegedly developed terminal cancer from exposure to the company’s weedkillers. The company has stated that the evidence did not sufficiently support the jury’s decision in favor of Dewayne Johnson. They are asking the judge to set aside the verdict or to reduce the award.

Johnson’s case is the first of thousands of lawsuits over Monsanto’s glyphosate weedkillers to go to trial. There are roughly 8,000 similar suits alleging the products, including Roundup and Ranger Pro, cause cancer.

Despite the many lawsuits, Bayer maintains that glyphostate-based herbicides are safe and do not cause cancer. Regarding the Johnson verdict, Bayer asserted that the evidence presented in the case fell below California’s causation standard.

“The decisions surrounding this case will set an important precedent for the thousands of lawsuits over glyphosate products,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
