Bayer, Monsanto Face 8,700 Lawsuits Over Glyphosate Weed Killers

There are currently about 8,700 lawsuits facing Monsanto over the cancer risks associated with its glyphosate-based weed killers, namely Roundup and Ranger Pro. In June, Bayer acquired Monsanto in a $63 billion deal. Just two months later, the company was ordered to pay $289 million in damages to Dewayne Johnson, a California groundskeeper who developed terminal cancer after years of working with Roundup. It was the first lawsuit over Roundup to go to trial. Bayer shares have lost more than 10% since the verdict was handed down.

Most plaintiffs have brought their lawsuits in state courts in California, Missouri and Delaware, while the rest have filed suit in federal courts. Bayer’s CEO has stated that the California jury’s $289 million verdict was inconsistent with scientific research on glyphosate. However, the World Health Organization and the State of California both list the chemical as a “probable carcinogen.” Bayer maintains that glyphosate is safe, even in large quantities.

Is Glyphosate Dangerous?

There is currently no clear scientific consensus on the safety of glyphosate. Johnson’s attorneys alleged that the mix of chemicals in Roundup may have made the glyphosate more dangerous, leading to Johnson’s cancer, but there has still not been much research done to test the safety of glyphosate with other surfactants. Unfortunately, there is still much unknown about the safety of this chemical.

“Hopefully these lawsuits prompt more research to be done on the safety of glyphosate,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
