Big Rig Fails to Stop at Tracks, Causes Train Crash

A train crash involving a big rig closed down Phelan Road for several hours Monday morning. The collision occurred on the Phelan Road railroad tracks west of Baldy Mesa Road around 6 a.m. Police say the tractor trailer was heading west on Phelan Road and failed to stop at the train tracks. The train engineer attempted an emergency stop but could not avoid colliding with the truck.

However, police say the train engineer was able to minimize the impact of the train crash by attempting the emergency stop, which slowed the train down significantly. A witness says the impact happened at about 8 mph and the big rig was only pushed three or four feet.

The incident closed down Phelan Road until 8:20 a.m. No one was injured in the crash.

Vehicle-train crashes result in hundreds of injuries and deaths each year. Most of these crashes can be avoided by following proper driving protocols around train tracks.

“Thanks to the attentiveness and quick response of the train engineer, a more serious crash was avoided,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
