A Blythe woman was killed Monday after she was struck on I-10 near Coachella. Authorities pronounced 39-year-old Maria Alvarado dead at 3:49 a.m. Police received reports of the fatal crash around 3:20 a.m.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a Chrysler 200 traveling in the eastbound lane about two miles east of Dillon Road struck Alvarado. The driver, a 57-year-old from Lake Havasu City, called in the crash. He remained at the scene for the investigation.

Why was Blythe Woman Walking on I-10?

Police do not suspect drugs or alcohol contributed to the fatal crash. However, they are unsure why the Blythe woman was on the interstate. She does not appear to have been driving, as no stopped vehicle was found in the area. Police shut down all eastbound I-10 lanes while they investigated. They reopened around 6 a.m.

Coachella Pedestrian Safety Grant Receives Approval

This crash is the second pedestrian fatality this year in the Coachella Valley. Last year, the area experienced 29 pedestrian deaths, making it the deadliest year for pedestrians since 2005. The Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) presented their proposal to put a $10 million grant toward road projects that would improve pedestrian safety throughout the area. Committee members approved the plan last month. Last week, the CVAG executive committee approved the proposal. Coachella Valley cities now need to propose their projects for the grant by May 1.

“We are so glad the committee voted to approve the grant. Our area is in desperate need of safety improvements to protect pedestrians,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
