What is the California Consumer Privacy Act?

Earlier this summer, California passed the strictest data privacy law in the country, the California Consumer Privacy Act. The law won unanimous approval in the State Assembly and Senate. So what does this policy entail?

The California Consumer Privacy Act, which takes effect in 2020, grants consumers the right to know what personal data companies, such as Facebook, are collecting on them—as well as who they are sharing it with. The law also requires that children under 16 specifically opt to allow companies to collect their information. Additionally, consumers will be able to bar companies from selling their data.

With such a long time before the law takes effect, it is anticipated that the specifics of the new law will be changed and refined in the coming months.

“It is encouraging that California is working toward protecting consumer privacy. However, there is still much to be done to ensure consumers’ personal information is being protected,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
