California Man Sues Mercedes Over Exploding Sunroof
California Man Sues Mercedes Over Exploding Sunroof

Mercedes has been hit with a class action over claims that its sunroofs can unexpectedly shatter. The suit was filed by Giorgio Enea of Alameda County. He says the panoramic sunroof on his Mercedes GLA SUV shattered as he was driving to work last June. The sunroof “spontaneously exploded,” sending glass everywhere.

Enea’s lawsuit says the problem is one that has plagued an entire class of Mercedes drivers in California. According to the class action, these “panoramic” sunroofs pose unique challenges, as they are larger than normal sunroofs, and that the Mercedes sunroofs are defective and render vehicles unsafe.

Enea also alleges that Mercedes-Benz refuses to compensate drivers for the defect, and that they know about the problem but neglect to warn drivers. He also claims that panoramic sunroofs have proven to be unsafe, and that Mercedes’ marketing of the vehicles equipped with such sunroofs is deceptive.

Exploding Sunroof Complaints Have Spiked in Recent Years

According to a Consumer Reports study, safety standards of sunroofs have not kept up with the dramatic size and design changes they have undergone over the years. In fact, at least 859 complaints about exploding sunroofs have been filed over the past 22 years. A majority of those complaints were made after 2010. The reports have been made of several automakers, but the problem is more prevalent in certain brands, such as Kia and Hyundai. Moreover, there is little consistency in how automakers handle the issue, and consumers are often left to deal with the repair and expense on their own.

“This is clearly an issue that needs to be thoroughly addressed by automakers and auto safety groups. Hopefully this class action brings much-needed attention to the problem,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
