California Receives Federal Funding to Fight Growing Problem of Opioid Addiction

Compared with the country as a whole, Riverside County has a relatively low rate of opioid abuse and deaths. However, parts of the Coachella Valley have seen a rise in the death rates from the opioid crisis over the past two years.

The areas most affected by the crisis are parts of Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, and the unincorporated communities bordering Joshua Tree National Park. The cause of the increase has not been pinpointed, but there has been a noticeable increase in patients seeking treatment for opioid addiction in these areas.

Funding Available for Medically Assisted Treatment

New state funding for treating opioid addiction should help more people in the region get the help they need. California will receive a total of $158.8 million from the federal government to help address the opioid epidemic. Through the state’s Opioid Strategic Plan, medically assisted treatment options for opioid addiction will be expanded.

Fortunately, the new funding has allowed local clinics to expand services for low-income patients, particularly in east Coachella Valley. The Desert Clinic Pain Institute has expanded its treatment program and has expanded its medically assisted treatment program to patients without health insurance coverage. The clinic is currently working with Coachella Valley Volunteers in Medicine to reach out to homeless community members who might need treatment.

“We are certainly hopeful that new funding and the expansion of treatment programs will help to combat the growing problem of opioid addiction,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
