Caltrans Investigating Dangerous Intersection in Palm Springs

Caltrans is investigating a dangerous intersection in Palm Springs that has been the site of multiple traffic collisions. The intersection of Vista Chino and Via Miraleste was the site of two fatal pedestrian accidents this past fall, as well as several other crashes.

Caltrans, which has jurisdiction over Vista Chino since it is part of Highway 111, is using a device called a Miovision Scout to gather data at the intersection. Caltrans officials say they will analyze the collected data to determine what changes need to be made to make it a safer intersection. Improvements might include signage, crosswalks and traffic signals.

According to the Coachella Valley Association of Governments, nearly 20,000 vehicles traveled in that area in 2015. The Desert Sun reports that 29 pedestrians were killed in the Coachella Valley in 2016, and the pedestrian fatality rate in Riverside County is higher than both state and national averages.

“We hope Caltrans is able to use the data gathered to make positive changes to the intersection, making it safer for pedestrians and motorists,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
